Purpose of this Wiki

The Free Educational Software Wiki was started as a presentation and resource tool for educators and technology staff. The idea of the wiki is to make free software finds as accessible as possible for future viewing and collaboration. Hopefully, this wiki will grow as word about the site passes along in the K-12 and higher education communities.

To follow a brief Wiki introduction trail install TrailFire (requires small TrailFire download). After installing TrailFire, you will find a small, blue t toward the top of this page. Click the t to see the TrailFire comment and click the arrows on the comment to follow to the next page of the trail.

Participate...After all, it is a Wiki!

Bookmark this page, and in the future you can add resources to the site as you find them. It will be easier for you (and the rest of us) to retrieve in the future from any Internet connected computer.

Technology Counts 2008 - West Virginia Gets the Only A+

The calls to improve education in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics come despite increased expectations over the past quarter-century. In its landmark 1983 report A Nation at Risk, for example, the National Commission on Excellence in Education cited 1980 data showing that 35 states required students to take only one year of math to earn a high school diploma, and 36 states required only one year of science. Today, 38 states require at least three years of math or are phasing in that standard. And 35 states require at least three years of science before graduation, or will add that mandate soon.

Groups push for media-literacy educationJuly 12, 2007—Nearly three out of five states say they have defined what it means for students to be "media literate" and have implemented media-literacy standards, according to a recent survey--a result suggesting that states are beginning to address the importance of preparing students for an information-rich society, but they still have more work to do. County Digital Divide Reports
Digital Divide Survey information is self-reported technology survey data collected from WV K-12 schools. This information evolves from the West Virginia K-12 strategic technology planning process for improved student achievement; the reported data enables West Virginia Department of Education, counties and schools to meet reporting requirements mandated by the federal programs, E-rate and No Child Left Behind, Title II, Part D. (from the WV Dept of Education Office of Technology)
